Installing and configuring Windows Server 2012 using GUI

I. Getting the Installation Media

You can download the Trial version and use it for testing for up to 180 days, and here is the link to download your trial: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-US/evalcenter/dn205286.aspx

II. Installing the new Windows Server 2012 R2

You can download the Trial version and use it for testing for up to 180 days, and here is the link to download your trial: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-US/evalcenter/dn205286.aspx

Step 1: In the following page, for a new installation we don’t have a lot of options, just hit Install now.

Step 2: Since we are using a MSDN version a product key as requested, if you are using a trial you can hit next and the key won’t be required during the installation process.

- Server Standard: NB4WH-BBBYV-3MPPC-9RCMV-46XCB
- Server Datacenter: BH9T4-4N7CW-67J3M-64J36-WW98Y
- Server Standard Core: NB4WH-BBBYV-3MPPC-9RCMV-46XCB
- Server Datacenter Core: BH9T4-4N7CW-67J3M-64J36-WW98Y

Step 3: In the following page we can select which version of the Operating System and if we are going to use GUI or core installation. Bear in mind, that we can always go back and forth with the GUI in Windows Server 2012. Let’s install the OS of this Tutorial with the GUI, select it and click Next.

Step 4: After that we have our traditional license license page, if you are okay with the terms click on I accept the license terms and click Next.

Step 5: In the Which type of installation do you want? page. In this page we can upgrade an existent server to Windows Server 2012 R2 if you want to, but in our case we want to install a new OS and use some of the advanced tools, let’s click on Custom: Install Windows only (advanced).

Note: If you are planning to perform an upgrade in-place and your current OS belongs to the Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 or Windows Server 2012 families you can use the Upgrade option. This following document can help you out: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn303416.aspx

When possible I would recommend to install a new OS from scratch and move the roles/data to the new server for the simple reason that you can do a smooth transition of your information and there is always a rollback plan available.

Step 6: In the Where do you want to install Windows? page. Here we can delete existent partitions and a hint here is that we don’t need to create a partition to install the OS, just select an unallocated space and then click Next. After that just wait for the installation to complete and the server will be restarted automatically.

Step 7: Installing Windows, please wait…

Step 8: The next page will be the Settings where we need to define a password for the administrator account, after defining this one, click on Finish.

Step 9: That’s all, we have the server ready to be configured, just hit Ctrl + Alt + Del and we can log on with the user administrator and the password that we have just defined in the previous step.

Step 10: Since we are using Windows Server 2012 R2, you may have noticed that we do have the Start “button” and when we right-lick on it we have the Shut down and sign out options which were missing on Windows Server 2012. We can always run winver to get the version and license of the existent operating system.
